South African rapper Reason, also known as Sizwe Alkaline, recently confronted podcasters Thakgi and Sfiso Ndlovu over derogatory remarks about his girlfriend, fellow rapper Gigi Lamayne. The controversy began when the podcasters questioned Reason's relationship choices, suggesting that dating Gigi Lamayne was a "downgrade" from his previous relationship with Metro FM host Luthando "LootLove" Shosha.
In a recent episode, Sfiso Ndlovu laughed while asking, "Do you think he downgraded? From LootLove to Gigi Lamayne?" Thakgi concurred, adding, "In terms of standard, I feel like it's dropped a bit."
Unwilling to let these comments go unaddressed, Reason made an unannounced appearance on their latest episode to challenge their views. He questioned the relevance of their discussion, stating, "So comfortable talking about me that you might as well talk about me while I'm here." He further challenged their basis for labeling his current relationship as a downgrade, asking, "What gives anyone the right to call anyone a downgrade? How did you quantify that my current girlfriend is a downgrade from my ex?"
Emphasizing that his relationship is built on love rather than external perceptions, Reason said, "I'm not dating someone because of their powerhouse. I am not dating someone because of what they have. I'm in a relationship with somebody because I love them."
Following this confrontation, the podcasters apologized to both Reason and Gigi Lamayne, expressing regret over their earlier comments. They acknowledged that the segment should not have been aired. Reason later shared their apology on his social media, captioning it, "At the end of the day, let it be known I am not the one."
Gigi Lamayne also addressed the incident, highlighting the harmful effects of labeling individuals with derogatory terms. She noted that such comments have led many to suffer mental breakdowns, stating, "Thank goodness it didn't do that to me, but many have been hurt to that point." She expressed disappointment in influential platforms promoting such opinions and advocated for kindness in public discourse. citeturn0search3
