Pope Francis passed away on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88, due to a cerebral stroke

  followed by irreversible cardiocirculatory collapse.  He passed away peacefully at his residence in the Casa Santa Marta of the Vatican. On Easter Sunday, he made his final public appearance, giving his final Urbi et Orbi blessing in St. Peter’s Square, calling for peace in Gaza.   ​  The Vatican announced on Tuesday, April 22, that the body of Pope Francis, which is currently resting in a coffin at the chapel of the Santa Marta residence, will be moved to St. on Wednesday morning at 9:00 a.m., Peter's Basilica (0700 GMT).  Following his passing, this is the next step in the rites of passage. ​  His service of remembrance is scheduled for Saturday, April 26 in St. Peter's Square, where Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re is in charge.
